August 16th and 30th: Tomato Seed Saving Open Workshops
@ the Berkeley Farmers Market (Derby x MLK); 2 pm - 7pm; free of charge
Stop by one of our favorite Bay Area markets a sunny Tuesday afternoon to lasso seeds from your favorite heirloom lycopersicum! We'll be demonstrating how to save seeds from the Cherokee Purple diva and her solanaceous sisters! Please bring a glass jar with a lid.

September 11th: Colors from Nature: Getting Started with Natural Dyes 
@ the PLACE for Sustainable Living (1121 64th Street in Oakland); 1 pm - 3 pm; $10 - $20 sliding scale
Learn how to make brilliant colors from your local environment with natural dyer and plants person Deepa Natarajan of the Permacouture Institute. In this two-hour workshop you will learn the basics of natural dyes, mordanting, medicinal dyes, making patterns on cloth, and flower printing. You will get to take home samples in a range of colors and fibers. No experience necessary.

Deepa worked with plants and people at the UC Botanical Garden for five years putting on their public education programs. During this time she cultivated her love of gardening and natural dyes. She has traveled to South India several times learning from master dyers and teaching workshops on local, natural dyes. She is currently working with the Permacouture Institute as the 'Seed to Sew' Project director to partner with local seed banks and to tag their seeds for fiber and dye properties.

September 13th-15th: National Heirloom Exposition
@ Santa Rosa (11-9 daily)
Join the Seedfolks and other Bay Area seed saving organizations as we participate in the nation's largest heritage produce event. Vandana Shiva will be speaking along with a bevy of other visionaries. Great people, beautiful food - come get inspired!

September 18th: Seed Circus
@ the Oakland Museum of CA; 1-4pm
The Seed Circus celebrates the agrarian tradition of celebrating fall harvest. The event is about harvesting and planting heirloom seeds and includes ukulele lessons, a reading library of farming books, and a pie contest judged by local pastry chefs. Two films that advocate localizing food production and revitalizing farm culture will be screened as well. Click here for details.


November 2: Seed Sovereignty!
@ the Day of Mass Action at Frank Ogawa Plaza in Oakland; 3:45 - 4 pm; free of charge
Seedfolks will be participating in the Food Justice Teach-In at the Oakland Day of Mass Action/General Strike by leading a seedball-making demonstration...can you imagine a chard forest at the corner of 29th and Telegraph? We can! Come make a chard-ball for tossing onto a spot of vacant dirt and help us to start farming our city! The Teach-In will feature organizations from across Oakland that are working to create a new, equitable and functional food system in Oakland.

January 21, 2012: Grand Opening Celebration for the Cesar Chavez Seed Library
@ the Cesar Chavez Public Library (3301 East 12th Street #201 in Oakland; 2-5 pm; free of charge
Join the Seedfolks and the Cesar Chavez Library staff and community as we celebrate the grand opening of Oakland's first public seed library! Although the library has been open and operational for a few months now, on our day of celebration we will offer short courses on how to use the library as well as a short interactive workshop: 'Easy Seed Saving.' Delicious food and bright spirits will be plentiful; come celebrate the emergence of this crucial piece of urban food sovereignty with us!

January 31: Indoor Seed Starting Class
@the Richmond Public Library (address in link that follows); 6:30 pm- 8:30 pm; free of charge
Join our seed sister library, Richmond Grows for this timely class! Learn how to start your vegetable garden inside to get a jumpstart on your garden. Friday March 30: 13th Annual BASIL Seed Swap
@ the Ecology Center in Berkeley, CA (2530 San Pablo Avenue near Dwight); 7 pm - 9 pm; Bring food and seeds to share or a $10 donation
Seed lovers in the Bay, this event is not to be missed! Join fellow gardeners for a potluck supper, hoe down music and some serious swapping of home-grown garden seeds! Learn about seed libraries in the Bay Area. BASIL (Bay Area Seed Interchange Library) is a project of the Ecology Center.


Saturday July 21: Basic Seed Saving Class
@ the Cesar Chavez Public Library (3301 East 12th Street #201 in Oakland; 1-3 pm; free of charge
Join the Seedfolks for a 'Basic Seed Saving' class. We'll have hands-on demonstrations of seed saving for peas, lettuce, beans and tomatoes. After the class is over, you can go into your gardens and save your favorite seeds for next year and (hopefully) donate a portion of them to the library's stock! Registration is free, but please email theseedfolks@gmail.com if you plan to attend. Light refreshments will be served and there will be plenty of seeds for you to check out for mid-summer and early fall plantings!
